I was raised on a lake and handled boats from age 5. I got into my first sailboat in 1972 with a “sailing dingy” that didn’t sail well, motor well or row well. That was soon replaced with a 16 foot Paceship which served me well for 20 years. In 1997 we bought a new 36 foot Catalina docked in San Diego, CA. where we put it into charter service. Investment wise it was not wise!!! In 1999 we bought a 26 foot Balboa and put it into service on Leech Lake. We fell in love with the area and stayed and built a home. While in Florida for the winter we found a 22 foot Rhodes and rehabilitated it. After sailing it on the Gulf of Mexico we decided to tow it back to Leech Lake. We had flown to Florida so we had to buy a car to drive the boat home. The Rhodes is a special boat and I have met the brothers that build them. Many other sailboats have come and gone over the years. I have sailed boats from 10 feet to 60 feet in length.
In 2001 a person asked me about “sailing lessons” and I contacted Captain Thom Burns, owner of Northern Breezes Sailing School and became a certified sailing instructor. Teaching sailing has filled a previously unknown need. I enjoy the students I have had the opportunity to work with over the years. Many of them sailed as a kid at their grand parent’s lake place and want to get back into the sport, or get their kids or grandkids into sailing. I have had students from most every line of work and from all over the country. Leech Lake is our home port but I have sailed the Great Lakes, Golf of Mexico, South Florida, Long Island Sound, U.S. and British Virgin Islands and California.
It is said that a power boat will get you to a destination but on a sailboat you have already arrived.
